Amsterdam packing list
Amsterdam's weather is unpredictable year-round. Select your travel month and activities, and we'll generate a tailored packing list.
Amsterdam packing essentials — always pack these
- Compact umbrella or packable rain jacket — it rains in every season. The Dutch use umbrellas on bikes.
- Comfortable walking shoes — cobblestones are everywhere.
- Bank card with contactless — €3.40/ride, no OV-chipkaart needed. Cash is rarely accepted.
- Museum tickets pre-booked — Van Gogh sells out; Anne Frank requires booking weeks ahead.
- Portable charger — for maps and digital tickets.
Amsterdam-specific tips
Cycling: Bike hire typically costs €10–20/day. Bring or hire a helmet (not mandatory but sensible). The tram tracks and cobblestones catch thin wheels.
Spring / Keukenhof: April mornings can be cold (8–12°C). Layer with a mid-layer you can remove. Allergy sufferers: bring antihistamines.
Winter: Sunset is as early as 15:30 in January. Plan indoor activities accordingly. Canal-house hotels have steep stairs — a smaller bag helps.
